Interview with Freddy Dumortier

Freddy Dumortier is well known for his work in bifurcation theory, blow-up techniques and slow-fast systems. His 60th birthday was celebrated in April 2007 in Hasselt and Brussels with the conference Dynamics in Perturbations. Bernd Krauskopf used this opportunity to talk to him at the Belgian Academy of Sciences Building about his views on the field of dynamical systems.

The answer after a lunch with Arnol'd

Gábor Domokos has written two papers in the 2006 fall issue of The Mathematical Intelligencer, one of them with Péter Várkonyi, on results that arose in answer to a question posed by Arnol'd. A brief biography of Carmen Chicone

Carmen Chicone is well known for his research in dynamical systems and applied mathematics. In May 2006, a Dynamical System Workshop was held at the University of Missouri-Columbia in honor of Carmen Chicone's 60th birthday (see also the report in DSWeb Magazine). Yuri Latushkin and Weishi Liu give an overview of his work to date.

Poetry and cockroaches

Phil Holmes is famous for his broad and innovative work in applied mathematics. Not only does he have a passion for the practical use of abstract mathematics, he also has a love for words and has published four books of poetry. He is currently the chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Dynamical Systems. Hinke Osinga talked to him about his work.

History and Origins of the Korteweg-de Vries Equation

Recently, Eduard de Jager (University of Amsterdam) posted a very nice overview paper on the archives discussing the origins of the Korteweg-de Vries equations. He provides a taster for the readership of DSWeb Magazine, which is a free translation by Hinke Osinga of a related shorter article of Eduard de Jager that was published in July 2004 in the Dutch magazine ITW Nieuws (News in Industrial and Applied Mathematics).
