Sensor Networks, Algebraic Topology, and Dynamics

Robert Ghrist gives an overview of how algebraic topology and dynamical systems are being applied to the engineering problem of sensor placement and data collection. Ghrist's work in this field with collaborator Vin de Silva, Pomona College earned them a 2007 SciAm 50 award, Scientific American's list of the fifty most important advancements in technology and innovation.

Climate Math in San Diego

Recently elected SIAG/DS chair Mary Lou Zeeman describes the special session on the mathematics of climate change at the Joint Math Meetings in San Diego in January, 2008. She lists a series of other ongoing efforts and upcoming conferences on the dynamics of climate change, and describes how members of the dynamics community can contribute both in research and in terms of education to tackle problems of climate change and sustainability.
