We also note that among the new APS fellows is Mason Porter, co-editor of DSWeb.  Congratulations, Mason!

When scientists talk about developing models as part of their research, they can refer to quite different things.  Even within industrial and applied mathematics, modeling can have a variety of meanings. To avoid confusion and clearly communicate the relevance of mathematical modeling, it's important to understand what those different meanings are.

The beginning of July also brought the opening of the 11th AIMS Conference on Dynamical Systems, Differential Equations and Applications that ran through July 5th at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Florida. 

Student Feature - Joshua Garland

Joshua Garland is an Omidyar Postdoctoral Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Colorado (supervised by Elizabeth Bradley), an M.S. in Applied Mathematics also from the University of Colorado, and a dual B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Colorado Mesa University.

Student Feature - Kelly Finn

Kelly is a 3rd year PhD student in the Animal Behavior Graduate Group at the University of California Davis.  Her advisor is Dr. Brenda McCowan of the school of Veterinary Medicine, and she also collaborates with Dr. Eliza Bliss-Moreau from the Psychology Department, Dr. Raissa D’Souza and Dr. Jim Crutchfield of the Complexity Sciences Center, and Dr. Andrew MacIntosh of Kyoto University.
