It’s the End of DSWeb as We Know It

For the last few years, SIAM has been trying to find a new platform to move DSWeb to as the current DNN (dot net nuke) platform has become unsustainable. Unfortunately, SIAM has come to the conclusion that there is no viable solution that allows SIAM to continue supporting DSWeb in its current form.

Thus, this issue of DSWeb Magazine is the final one. There are two pieces of good news, however.

First, the DSWeb site will be archived and remain fully hyperlinked and navigable at https://archive-.

Second, since DSWeb was first launched in 2003, SIAM’s online community resources have expanded to the point where all the elements featured in DSWeb can find new homes. Specifically, SIAM Engage has been created to provide a platform for announcements and discussion, and there is a SIAG/DS "get involved" webpage that provides basic information about the SIAG. And in an exciting recent development, a new Activity Group Website is currently being built that will be hosted on GitHub. The SIAG/DS GitHub website will be maintained by an editorial board consisting of the SIAG/DS officers and other SIAG members, who will solicit content from the SIAG/DS community. Thus:

• Software repositories can be housed on SIAG/DS’s GitHub site, which is being set up now. Indeed, all existing SIAG websites and wikis are being moved to GitHub.
• Other DSWeb elements, such as the media gallery and educational resources, can also be housed on GitHub, either as repositories or as links from the (new) SIAG/DS website.
• Pieces of general interest, such as research articles and professional/student features, that first appear on the SIAG/DS Website can then also be submitted to SIAM News, either as articles or as blog posts.
• Job postings and other announcements for the community can be posted on SIAM Engage.

The current SIAG/DS officers, the DSWeb Editorial Board, and the incoming SIAG/DS officers will work together on this process. A survey will also be sent to the SIAG/DS membership to gather input on how to replace DSWeb in a way that best serves the SIAG/DS community.

SIAM recognizes the great benefit that DSWeb has provided to the community for many years and appreciates all the people that have contributed to its success. SIAM is committed to continuing as much as possible of its traditional content in new formats that it hopes will provide additional benefits to SIAG/DS.
